Preparing Your Home For a Hot Tub

Before purchasing and installing your newly-purchased hot tub, take time to consider these three important factors about your home.

1. Level Surface

Hot tubs need to sit on solid, level surfaces. You’ll want to ensure that your home is equipped with a deck or concrete pad (we recommend 4”) capable of holding 150 lbs of weight per square foot. We also offer a great "spa pad" that can be put on a gravel base and support your tub...without the permanency of concrete. While 8x8 is a standard size, you can also plan to customize your spa pad with a specific size or features like stairs.

2. Electrical Wiring

Every hot tub requires an individual electrical hook up. Both 240 volt and 120 volt spas are available. As hot tub dealers, The Place will help you choose the hot tub that is most compatible with your electrical resources. We recommend a professional electrician make the connections necessary to operate your spa. We are not certified electricians and therefore unable to make your final connection. However, if you use our recommended electrician, he will do delivery, electrical hook-up, fill it up and add your starter care products. All you have to do is wait for it to heat up and slide in.

3. Water

Trucking in water is expensive and usually unneccessary. Consider which water source you plan to use to fill your hot tub. While hot tubs require no plumbing hook up, you will need an accessible garden hose to fill them. The Place recommends city water for filling your hot tub. We recommend a water pre-filter (which attaches to your hose) for any other water sources.

If you have any questions about the requirements listed above, call us at (330) 239-4000. One of our experienced staff members would be happy to work with you in making sure that nothing gets in the way of making your hot tub dream a reality!

Why Get a Hot Tub?

Do you ever wake up in the middle of the night? Your mind racing, your body aching, you toss and turn trying to get comfortable. You can lay there until exhaustion kicks in, you can give up on sleep and clean the kitchen, you can hit the meds, or you can slide outside into your hot tub and sink into the soothing warm water.

Spend 20 minutes outside with the liquid heat sinking down into your bones and sleep will come easier!

In the morning, do your muscles want to stay in bed? Is it painful to walk? Does the pain subside as you get moving during the course of the day? Get up 15 minutes early, go into your spa, and your pain will retreat much faster. Add the cup of hot coffee and view of the sunrise and your day will get off to an awesome start.

Did the stress of working all day, dealing with traffic, and the knowledge that your day is just beginning with laundry, dinner making, homework, and needy family waiting turn you into a Grumpy Grouch before you even opened the door? Hug the kids, smile at the spouse and retreat to the “decompression chamber” of your hot tub. In a scant 20 minutes the kids will get the parent they deserve and your spouse the person they married. Dinner can wait for a few minutes!

How about those kids? Bouncing off the walls again? Have a spa break and let the relaxation begin. It’s better than a warm bath inside because you can get in too. When’s the last time you got to float a rubber ducky with your kids? It’s surprising how the spa opens up lines of communication with your teen too.

Warm water has been known to have restorative qualities since the Romans started the first pool party! Never before has such an affordable luxury been available to so many. What once was thought of as a toy of the rich is now the lovely backyard retreat in many quiet and unassuming homes in neighborhoods just like yours. While you can spend $10,000 or more, there are many affordable tubs starting at $3500.

Buying a hot tub can be confusing. There are some things that will make it easier for you. Let’s compare to buying a house. You want a home that fits your needs both now and in the foreseeable future. You want a home that fits your budget. And finally, you want a home in a nice neighborhood.

Purchasing a spa is just like that. It needs to fit your needs. Do you want therapy, entertainment, big enough for company or small and intimate? Do you want to be able to exercise or just relax? What body parts hurt? Do you have a condition that might worsen over time? Don’t forget getting older! Short spas (29-31”) are very difficult to get in and out of, especially if you have sore hips and knees. In addition, the shorter the spa, the less leg room there is available. Think of sitting on the floor, your legs go out. When you sit in a chair your legs go down and there is more room.

What is your budget? Things like stereo and TV’s may be fun and sexy but there are many ways that they can be incorporated into your yard at a later date. You can’t make a spa more powerful or larger or more therapeutic later.   So if the budget is not as flexible, choose the best quality spa it allows and add the bells and whistles later.

Lastly, there is the neighborhood. A great house in a not so great location becomes not so great! The neighborhood is the dealership that you make your purchase. You want a knowledgeable dealership that can help you if you ever have a problem. You want them educated in the latest information on taking care of the water chemistry in your spa. You want them to be available for service if you need it. It helps if spas are a main part of the business as well. You don’t want someone who just dabbles!

The best place to start looking for a good dealership is to check the Better Business Bureau. For our area checkwww.cleveland.bbb.org and www.akron.bbb.org . The Better Business Bureau has made it simpler to understand their ratings by ranking in an A+ to F format. Just like school! Obviously a company that has an A+ rating would be more desirable to work with than one whose grade is less. Luckily there are a number of excellent dealerships out there to choose from.

Arthritis and Hot Water Therapy

Warm water, combined with the therapeutic massage action of hydro massage jets, has made hot tub bathing one of the most popular ways for arthritis sufferers to alleviate chronic pain and stiffness.

By just spending 10 to 15 minutes per day in water temperatures between 36 degrees Celsius and 40 degrees Celsius (80 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit), you can significantly improve your body's coordination and flexibility, giving you a new lease on life.

In fact, many doctors strongly recommend hydrotherapy (soaking in warm water) as a part of a comprehensive approach to alleviating chronic arthritis pain, which may also include physiotherapy and hypnosis (for increasing pain tolerance), and pharmacological (drug) treatments.

A hot tub also provides you with an excellent place to exercise sore arms and legs. Unlike land-based exercises, which force your muscles and joints to fight against gravity when they are moved, exercising in the warm water of a hot tub is much easier because your body becomes virtually weightless, requiring less energy and strength to move and stretch limbs.

The near-weightlessness of the aquatic environment also makes it easier for your heart to pump blood throughout your body, while the warm temperature of the water helps your heart by dilating or enlarging blood flow to your extremities.

The hot tub's hydro massage jets are also an excellent way to reduce pain in targeted areas of your body. Jets in the footwell, for example, alleviate pain in your ankles and feet, while swirling jets installed in the back of a hot tub's lounger soothe tense muscles in your back and neck area.

If you have a problem with morning stiffness, a relaxing soak before you head out the door is an enjoyable and effective way to loosen up any tight muscles. If your arthritis pain is worse at night, waking you every time you change position, have a soak before bedtime. Nothing works better ni relieving pain and stiffness than the warm water and soothing hydro massage action of a hot tub.
